UPDF Soldier Guarding UNEB Exams Disappears with Gun

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces -UPDF and police in Kalisizo town, Kyotera district, are hunting for a soldier identified Sergeant -Sgt Luke Apangu for allegedly disappearing with Army’s gun number XK-575926 in the wee hours of yesterday morning.

Sgt Apangu was guarding the Uganda National Examination Board -UNEB store at Kalisizo police station when he disappeared at around 4:14 am. The information Daily Press has obtained from Kyotera shows Sgt Apangu retreated to his tent near the UNEB container at midnight.

“Apangu left other police officers who were on night duty and he went to his cover in the tent near the UNEB container. Four hours later, he came to the counter and dropped a porch containing three full magazines, a key to the UNEB store, and a torch telling officers at the counter that his gun had been stolen from him. He then took off before he could explain how his gun had been stolen,” security sources said.

Sgt Apangu had been with one magazine and the other three on the porch. Daily Press has since established that Sgt Apangu was pursued by colleagues who needed to know more of what had transpired in vain. The colleagues according to sources include Sgt Turyahikayo, Police Constable Otabong, and PC Apeduno.

“The three officers tried to follow him to get an explanation from him but he disappeared into the darkness. We introduced the canine to the scene and tracked up to the Bibiro stage for taxis along the Kyotera-Masaka highway where it lost track,” sources said.

The scene was visited by crime intelligence officers, scene of crime officers, the District police commander, and military officers who have since concluded that Sgt Apangu disappeared in civilian wear.

Security’s preliminary findings show Sgt Apangu left all his army uniforms in his tent and the police uniport. Another thing security has established is that there were no visible signs of struggle during the alleged attack where the rifle was lost. In addition, security has observed that the soldier did not make any alarm as he was allegedly being attacked.
