All Saints Cathedral Kampala has been inaugurated as a deanery, with The Very Rev. Dr Rebecca Margaret Nyegenye installed as the Dean in a ceremony presided over by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu.
During the service, Rev. Deacon Amai Sadrack was priested, while six other clergy were ordained deacons. Those ordained deacons are Kisakye Samuel, Rebecca Kataate, Kobusingye Charity Rushaju, Ainomugisha Witness, Annette Kobusingye and Nayebare Peninnah.
The inauguration marks an administrative change in the Church of Uganda, with All Saints Cathedral transitioning from the Central Archdeaconry, which previously supervised several parishes, to a deanery operating as a single church under the leadership of the Dean.
Under the new arrangement, the parishes previously under the Central Archdeaconry have been redistributed to the Kisugu, Ntinda and Makerere archdeaconries. The change also means that the head of All Saints Cathedral, previously known as the Provost when the church operated as the Central Archdeaconry, will now be known as the Dean.
Church of Uganda officials described the development as a sign of institutional growth and self-sustainability, noting that the Dean will concentrate on the leadership and spiritual oversight of the cathedral rather than supervising other parishes. The newly ordained clergy are expected to serve in parishes where they have already been undergoing pastoral training.
Archbishop Kaziimba Mugalu, who is also the Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, was the main celebrant at the service, while the Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, the Rt. Rev. Fredrick Jackson Baalwa, delivered the sermon.
The service was attended by several senior church leaders, including the former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Henry Luke Orombi; the Bishop of the Diocese of Karamoja, Bishop Michael Chorey; the Bishop of the Diocese of North Karamoja, Bishop Simon Akol Aisu; and Bishop Emeritus Dr Hannington Mutebi, the former Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala.
The inauguration and installation represent a new chapter in the administration of All Saints Cathedral Kampala, with the church taking on a distinct identity as a deanery within the Diocese of Kampala.
