The Uganda police force has said that a Uganda Christian University (UCU) student, Natasha Nagayi, shot by a counterterrorism commander is out of danger.

Nagayi was shot three times by Assistant Superintendent of Police – ASP Dismass Tebangole, after he allegedly mistook her for a burglar.

This incident occured at Nabuti village, in the Central Division of Mukono Municipality. Trouble started when, Ashraf Bandishe, gave Nagayi his rented house’s keys to go and rest alongside her other friend identified as Natukunda.

Fred Enanga the police spokesperson said Nagayi was misled by a Bodaboda rider who claimed he knew Bandishe’s home.

“When they reached at the houses where our officer ASP Tebangole rents, the Bodaboda rider directed her to a room he claimed it was for Bandishe. The student tried to open the door and our officer shot her through the glasses,” Enanga said.

Nagayi screamed for help informing people that she was not a thief. The apartments caretaker, Hannington Ssengendo and other locals rushed Nagayi to Kawolo hospital treatment. She was later transferred to Mulago hospital where the bullets were removed.

Enanga said Nagayi’s condition had steadily improved and she was expected to be discharged on Monday evening.

However, police said ASP Tebangole is still being held as investigators wait for the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) advice on the appropriate offences to prefer against him.

Details show Nagayi, Bandishe, Natukunda and other students went for an outing at Fox Lounge and decided to return home when it was already late.

Nagayi decided to take rest at Bandishe’s home since she could not return to her apartmen late at night.

“I am not a girlfriend to Bandishe but he’s my OB. It was late and I could not return to my apartment. I decided to go to his home because he was going to spend the night with his male colleagues,” Nagayi reportedly told police.
