IGP Martin Ochola

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Martin Ochola, has instructed all territorial commanders to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims as they walk through their jurisdictions.
Ochola in his order wants commanders to escort them and provide protection to them even at places of rest like churches, schools and community centres.
“They should restrict all movements under the cover of darkness at night and early morning and further identify those who cannot endure the journey for medical attention,” IGP Ochola said in a statement issued by police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

Ochola has also directed the force’s ambulances be deployed on all major highways for medical evacuation and emergency response.
Enanga said the IGP has asked pilgrims trekking to Namugongo to stay with the group, and not be discouraged.
“Due to the unpredictable weather, they should carry warm clothing, IDs, mobile phones, light bags, reflectors and ensure they have transport money or transport arranged, for their return journey,” IGP said.
Ochola has further urged the pilgrims, especially new comers to be vigilant and cautions while going through the heavy traffic, and watch against criminals and fraudsters who target phones and other valuables.
“Once again, we would like to wish all pilgrims, a safe journey to Namugongo, as they trek to renew their faith and fulfil their religious obligations,” Ochola said.
Police has applauded both the Catholic and Protestant Dioceses, for issuing safety guidelines to all pilgrims trekking on foot.
