The Uganda Prisons Service -UPS has refuted reports that Makindye West Member of Parliament -MP Allan Ssewanyana has been rushed to Mulago hospital in a critical condition.

For the last two days, there have been information circulating on social media that MP Ssewanyana’s health had deteriorated inside Murchison Bay hospital in Luzira prison and was rushed by the authorities to Mulago hospital for specialized treatment.

But Prisons leadership through the spokesperson, Frank Baine, has dismissed and described any information about MP Ssewanyana being admitted to Mulago hospital as false and intended to cause unnecessary alarm.

Baine said the legislator was in stable state at Murchison Bay hospital where he was taken after his health because worth while inside Kitalya jail barely 10 days ago.

Ssewanyana and his Kawempe North counterpart, Muhammad Ssegirinya, have spent over 16 months in prison after they were arrested on allegations of participating in the 2021 infamous greater Masaka machete attacks that left close to 30 killed by hacking.

Efforts to have the legislators released on bail have been fruitless as Judges keep dismissing any court applications seeking to have them temporarily set free.

When Ssewanyana was transferred from Kitalya to Luzira hospital, his legal team led by Erias Lukwago, the Kampala Lord Mayor, said he was in a bad state and needed public prayers.

But Baine in response to URN inquiry on the latest condition of the legislator said he was very okay.

Imran Haruna Ssebagala the MP’s political personal assistant insists the legislator was still in a bad state inside Murchison Bay hospital.

“He is still in Murchison Bay but in a bad situation he can’t even talk. He has prisoners who are taking care of him,” Ssebagala said.

Asked on whether the MP’s wife Lydia Namatta Ssewanyana has had access to him, Ssebagala said she had visited him but could not be allowed to stay taking care of him.
