
At least five family members in Kabalagala have been reduced to ashes after the house they were sleeping in caught fire in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
Kabalagala is one of the busy and highly populated suburbs of Kampala. The inferno that claim the five people occured at 2am at Yoka zone, Bukasa parish, Makindye.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, has identified the deceased as Steven Luyomba 50, Doreen Nafula 35, Sumei Lubega 16, Edith Naiga 15, and Andrew.
Police preliminary investigations indicate that the fire started from unattended to candle from a makeshift house of Charles Ogola who deals in plastics and later spread to Luyomba’s home.
“We, however caution the public against leaving fires unattended to because they are dangerous to others,” Owoyesigyire said.
This is not the first time a family has perished in a fire in Kabalagala and it’s neighbouring village of Kansanga. In 2018, a mother and her three children perished in a fire that happened in Nabutiti zone in Kansanga. The victims were identified as Annet Tusasirwe, 35, while her three children included Elijah Akankwasa, 10, Musa Kyakuha, 5, and eight-months-old Rebecca.
