Hassan Mubiru is on police handcuffs at Mulago hospital after he was burnt by the very concentrated acid, he had planned to pour on his ex-wife Sumayah Babirye, a mobile money agent in Matugga town, Wakiso district.
Mubiru, who is a resident of the Kizito zone, Luweero district, separated from Babirye some months back but he decided to spy on her latest area of abode. After gathering enough information about Babirye’s new area of residence, Mubiru hired a Bodaboda rider who helped him to trail his ex-wife up to her house.
This, according to Matugga police, happened at around 8 pm last week. Babirye had just reached her home gate and saw her ex-husband Mubiru disembarking on a Bodaboda meaning they had trailed her from her workplace.
Detectives at Matugga police have said Mubiru grabbed Babirye and attempted to pour acid which was in a plastic bottle on her face. But Babirye made an alarm that attracted, Christopher Mayambala, a neighbour.
“When they reached her, her ex-husband grabbed her and attempted to pour suspected acid in a plastic bottle on her face. She made an alarm which attracted a neighbour called Mayambala Christopher, aged 35, who came to her rescue. During the scuffle, all three persons, the suspect, the responder, and the victim suffered serious injuries,” the detective said.
Senior Commissioner of Police -SCP Fred Enanga said Mubiru whose criminal acts caused injuries to Babirye and Mayambala is being guarded at Mulago Regional Referral Hospital because he was also burnt by the same acid.
Enanga said a serious manhunt for the Bodaboda rider who facilitated the attack is in place. Police said further arrangements were underway to have Mubiru charged to court with Attempted Murder, as soon as he gets discharged from the hospital.
“We also want to use this opportunity to advise former partners, that even after separation or divorce, one can still have a healthy relationship with a former spouse, or ex-lover, without perpetrating destructive plans or ill-intentions against them. Jealousy in a relationship, past or present can be healed,” Enanga said.
