Uganda Prisons Services -UPS warder, Jacob Otim, has been arrested after shooting and killing his two colleagues at Bugungu prison, in the Buikwe district. UPS Spokesperson, Frank Baine, said Otim 28, signed for a gun at 7:15 am to go for general duties but headed straight to the sentry where wardress Eunice Abwot was and shot her dead.
Baine said another UPS officer, Edward Namanya, was shot and killed by the same culprit when he rushed to see what had happened after hearing gun sounds in the sentry where their colleague Abwot was working.
“On hearing the sound of the gun, the second sentry Namanya Edward came to establish the cause of the shooting. Unfortunately, he too was shot dead by Otim. After shooting the two, Otim tried to commit suicide but failed. He was then subdued by other staff on duty and detained,” Baine said.
Abwot was born in Laroo Sub-county, Gulu district in the Acholi sub-region while Namanya was a hailing from Rukiga district in the Kigezi sub-region. The shooter was handed over to the police and now waits to appear in criminal court to face murder charges.
A month ago, police officer Bob Kopi shot and killed his colleague John Ogwal in the Moyo district. Kopi later turned the trigger on himself. The two allegedly developed a misunderstanding after taking alcohol at Vura Opi Village.
