Sam Bazibu, a police officer attached to Kawempe police station, is now part of road crash death statistics after he was run over by a Fuso Truck driver in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said the deceased corp was knocked alongside his colleague Brenda Nabifo at Bwaise at 4 am but the driver just sped off until he was intercepted by Nateete police.
“The deceased officer has been identified as No 66385 Police Constable Bazibu Sam, a police officer attached to Kawempe Police station.
It is alleged that while Police Constable Bazibu and his colleague 77149 Police Constable Nabifo Brenda were on Motorcycle Registration Number UP 7866 at Bwaise doing Patrol, motor vehicle Registration UAM 809L Fuso knocked them and kept going,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Bazibu’s corpse has been conveyed to the city mortuary Mulago for post mortem while his colleague Nabifo is currently receiving treatment at Mulago for injuries sustained.
“The motor vehicle UAM 809L was intercepted from Nateete and the driver was arrested. Investigations into the cause of the accident are still ongoing,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Police have conveyed its condolences to the family of the deceased officer. The force has also vowed to probe the matter to its logical conclusion.
“The police at Kampala Metropolitan will see to it that the deceased officer receives a proper send-off. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” ASP said.
At least 20 people have been killed in the last two days road crashes in Kampala, Arua and Soroti. The crashes at Kabuusu in Lubaga division on Thursday killed five people on spot. On the same day, five others were killed in Soroti and others died yesterday in Arua when mobile market traders were heading to sell merchandise.
