The police force in Nakapiripirit district has arrested and charged to court their own Constable Abel Hasahya on allegations of stealing 14 jerricans of waragi jerricans. According to Assistant Inspector of Police -AIP Mike Longole the Mt Moroto police spokesperson, Constable Hasahya and two other civilians broke into a Waragi store and varnished with the jerricans about seven days ago.
Police investigations conducted under case reference CRB 334/2022, have revealed that the two civilians helped Hasahya to carry the stolen Waragi to an unknown destination. The suspect broke into the store lonely and later sought help from the civilians.
After collecting more than enough evidence incriminating Hasahya, police sent the file to Resident State Attorney (RSA) for perusal and legal advice. The RSA immediately sanctioned the file and Hasahya has since been arraigned before Nakapiripirit Grade One Magistrate Court on charges placed against him.
The Magistrate has remanded the policeman to the Namalu government prison while the civilians have been cautioned and released. The exoneration of the civilians was based on their proof that they were not part of Hasahya’s acts but they helped him after his request.
AIP Longole said before being remanded, Constable Hasahya confessed while in the dock that he indeed broke into the store and stole the 14 jerricans of Waragi. “He appeared in Nakapiripirit grade one magistrate court to answer charges against him and was remanded to Namalu Government Prison. Police as an institution do not condone indiscipline from its officers and any officer who commits a crime will be dealt with according to the law,” AIP Longole said.
