The display of fireworks will lock the Hindu temple in Arua City as the Indian Community ushers in the New Year. This follows clearance by the Inspector General of Police, Martin Ochola, upon a request by leaders of the Indian Community.

Ululations, excitement, and Indian dances will be witnessed today at the Hindu temple located along Afro-road, Arua City between 8 pm and 9 pm as per the guidelines that have been contained in the IGP’s clearance notification.

Superintendent of Police -SP Josephine Angucia, the West Nile police spokesperson, said everything was set for the New Year’s celebrations. “The Inspector General of Police has cleared the Indian Community to display fireworks on 24th October 2022 during the Indian New year celebrations at Hindu temple, Afro road, Arua City. The display will occur between 8-9 pm subject to adherence to the guidelines issued by the Inspector General of Police,” SP Angucia said.

But SP Angucia said the conditions for a peaceful celebration include wide advertisement to be done, the materials be of less sound and not more than 1.5mm caliber, and the display should not be more than 5 minutes.

“Counter-terrorism to escort, any fireworks materials not displayed must be handed over to the counter-terrorism officer. The area Police Commander and Counter terrorism officer should inspect the venue before the display exercise,” SP Angucia explained the details of the conditions.

Police have urged the general public not to panic but to remain calm during the display exercise so as to avoid unnecessary stampedes and injuries.
