Police in Kamuli District have recovered a substantial quantity of suspected government drugs and medical equipment labelled “Government of Uganda – Not for Sale” from premises in Kamuli Municipality.
The recovery followed intelligence received by Police regarding the alleged unlawful possession and suspected sale of government medical supplies in the area.
According to Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson Samson Lubega Kagogola, a Police team proceeded to verify the information and conducted searches at the identified premises.
During the operation, Police recovered assorted drugs and medical equipment bearing government markings and suspected to have originated from government medical supply channels. A government refrigerator was also impounded from a motor vehicle believed to be connected to the matter.
One suspect, Nangobi Lydia, was arrested and is currently assisting Police with investigations. Police are also pursuing another suspect who remains at large. The motor vehicle believed to be connected to the incident has also been impounded.
Preliminary investigations indicate that some of the recovered medicines had expired. Police are working with relevant authorities to establish the source of the medical supplies, how they came into the possession of the suspects and the circumstances under which they were allegedly stored and offered for sale.
Police are liaising with relevant agencies, including the National Medical Stores (NMS), National Drug Authority (NDA) and other responsible health authorities, to verify the recovered items and establish the full chain of accountability. The recovered exhibits are being documented, sorted and secured as investigations continue.
Police have cautioned members of the public against dealing in government medical supplies marked “Not for Sale” and urged anyone with information regarding the illegal diversion, possession or sale of such supplies to report to the nearest Police station.
