Denis Lubega is in Katwe police custody on allegations of strangling his two year old son Brighton Lubega.
The suspect is a resident of Kanyanya zone, Ndejje parish, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, in Wakiso District.
Sandra Mugonza, the suspect’s wife and mother to the killed boy, said she left Lubega in the living room with the boy while going to attend to the kitchen.
Mugonza said upon return, she noticed that Lubega had locked himself up in the bedroom with the child who was screaming for help.
“I knocked on the door but he was not opening. I made an alarm which attracted the neighbourhood and they broke the door to access the bedroom,” Mugonza said
But before they could completely break the bedroom door, Lubega handed them the body of the lifeless child. The locals called police which arrested him.
Assistant Superintendent of Police – ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said Brighton’s body was conveyed to the city mortuary for Postmortem and investigations into the matter have started.
“The motive of the murder is unknown. However, the suspect alleges he got a supernatural attack which made him kill his child,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Lubega is a mechanic at Najjanankumbi. His colleagues and relatives have dismissed his claims of having been attacked by supernatural powers.
It is believed that relatives and his fellow mechanics have never seen him with any episode of Mental breakdown. He is suspected to be of sound mind.
“He will be subjected to a Medical examination to ascertain the status of his mental health,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
At least 10 children have been brutally killed by their parents in the last two months. A mother in Kikuube district killed her three children on August 25. Another mother killed her two children in Mukono district.
