The Flying Squad Unit (FSU) has killed a suspected car robber identified as Lawrence Businge Amooti alias Mutooro. Assistant Superintendent of Police -ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said Mutooro was neutralized at Gganda village, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso district.
“One person has succumbed to injuries sustained after being shot by our officers during an intelligence-led operation. The operation followed the theft of a motor vehicle UAQ 571 B belonging to a journalist that was stolen on Thursday from the city center while parked in the city Parking space” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Tina Smole reported the case regarding the theft of her vehicle to Central Police Station -CPS Kampala where a hunt for the robbers was launched by FSU. ASP Owoyesigyire said the FSU team swiftly retrieved Closed-Circuit Television -CCTV footage from the nearby camera and they successfully identified the culprit.
FSU has since established that Mutooro is a serial robber who had for long engaged in thefts of vehicles and has been on numerous occasions charged in courts of law. Police said whenever Mutooro comes out of jail, he starts from where he stopped.
“He was pursued by the task team from Flying Squad Unit until today in Gganda where bullets were fired and unfortunately one wounded him. He later succumbed to bullet injuries at the scene,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Mutooro’s body was conveyed to the city mortuary Mulago for post-mortem. Smole’s recovered vehicle has been recovered at the crime scene in Gganda, Nansana. The Criminal Investigations Directorate -CID records show Uganda loses over 7000 cars to thieves and robbers who in most cases dismantle them into spare parts or smuggle them into DRC.
