After more than 12 hours of the public scratching heads wondering who is the Asian man in a viral video being kidnapped by armed men in military uniform, police in Kampala have identified the victim as Rafik Khan, a Pakistan national.
Police through Assistant Superintendent of Police –ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy police spokesperson for Kampala, has said Khan’s kidnap which has since turned into an aggravated robbery happened yesterday at 5pm at Kamuli road, Kireka, in Kira Municipality.
“It is alleged that Rafik Khan 36 a Pakistani National and resident of Kiwatule-Nakawa, was stopped by a group of people among whom 2 were wielding SMGs and donning Military fatigue while others were casually dressed,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
The video shows Khan being pulled from the driver’s seat and bundled into the boot of his motor vehicle Probox UBM 877B Probox. The assailants, according to police, drove off via the northern by-pass.
Khan was abandoned at Kasangalabi along Kayunga – Mukono Road after being robbed of USD 300 USD and Shillings700,000 including his two Samsung Smart Phones. “The Police have today morning revisited the crime scene and established that the assailants were allegedly dropped off by a Toyota fielder and stood in wait for their target to pass by,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Police have since resolved to use the closed circuit television cameras to establish the car’s movement and to whom it belongs. Khan is being treated at a health facility that has been kept a secret.
This is not the first time men donned in soldiers have robbed people in day and night hours. Police with help of sniffer dogs arrested six soldiers about two weeks ago over a robbery roadblock mounted at Kyoga swamp in Wakiso district where a businessman George Turahabwa was robbed of unspecified amount of money.
