Cinema Hall Operator Burns Client to Death

SP Josephine Angicia

Police in Arua City are hunting for one, Sunday Gabo, an operator of a cinema hall, who is accused of burning to death his client, Joshua Amaka, following a quarrel that emanated from a money balance.

According to Superintendent of Police -SP Josephine Angucia, the West Nile police spokesperson, Gabo asked the deceased to go and buy him petrol for refilling his generator in order to run the cinema hall.

Gabo, who is currently on the run gave Amaka 20000 shillings to buy fuel of 10000 shillings and bring back the balance. Upon return, Amaka demanded a transport refund of 5000 shillings which the suspect accepted.

However, trouble came when Amaka declined to give Gabo the remaining balance of 5000 shillings insisting he was demanding transport for the previous days he had sent him for the same task.

SP Angucia explains that the duo picked quarrels and the suspect poured the petrol Amaka had just brought on him and subsequently set him on fire. Football and cinema lovers had gathered and watched as events unfolded. Many scampered for their dear life when Amaka started burning.

“Other onlookers who had gone to watch the football match in the hall ran out of the hall including the suspect leaving the deceased struggling for his life. The victim later forced his way out of the hall where good Samaritans help to put off the fire on him using sand,” SP Angucia said.

Amaka was later taken to the Arua hospital by people led by Local Council Two Chairman, Anania Abiria Opiyo. This incident happened on the night of September 14 which is about a fortnight ago.

Amaka has been receiving treatment until he was declared dead yesterday. This has changed the investigation file from grievous harm to murder. Gabo is now being hunted to answer for murder charges. The case was recorded under SD 12/15/09/2022.
