Uganda’s youngest political party, National Unity Platform –NUP, has chosen journalists’ president, Kazibwe Bashir Mbazira, to be its flagbearer for Kawempe South constituency MP race.
Mbazira is current president of Uganda Journalists Association –UJA whose first term of two years is expiring in the next few weeks. There has been a big debate on who was deserving NUP ticket between Dr Roy Ssemboga and Mbazira.
However, Mbazira according to NUP’s vetting committee was found to be more loved and appealing to Kawempe South voters compared to Dr Ssemboga. It is not clear whether Dr Ssemboga will withdraw from the race and back Mbazira or he will contest as an independent, a route several NUP members who have missed on party ticket have chosen.
In other constituency, Kampala Capital City Authority –KCCA speaker, Abubakar Kawalya, was given NUP ticket to contest for Lubaga North constituency at the expense of the incumbent Moses Kasibante who sought the same ticket.
Makindye East incumbent MP Allan Ssewanyana, was also given ticket for 2021 MP race while Kigozi Ssempala Ssajja Lyabeene missed out on NUP ticket despite being the incumbent for Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality. All members who feel they wrongly missed out on NUP ticket have 14 days to petition to another committee.
