According to Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, 38 suspects have been arrested in operations carried out in Kampala City centre and Goma Division of Mukono Municipality.

Owoyesigyire said the operations are aimed at disrupting criminal activities in known black spots. He explained that in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality, the operation was carried out in the areas of Bajjo and Seeta, leading to the arrest of 21 suspects.

“The suspects were found in hideouts known for harbouring criminals involved in smoking opium and robbing unsuspecting members of the public. The suspects are detained at Mukono Police Station pending prosecution,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police said in Kampala Central, an operation similar to that of Goma Division was conducted in the areas of William Street, Kinamwandu Corridor, Nakasero, and Old Park. The Kampala operations led to the arrest of 17 suspects for allegedly preying on passengers and traders within these black spots and they are currently detained at CPS Kampala pending court action.

Rachael Kawala the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson said the operations were extended to Wakiso and three drug dealers were apprehended. “Three suspected drug dealers have been arrested in an operation conducted in Wakiso and they are being held at Wakiso police station for allegedly being in possession of Narcotic drugs,” Kawala said.

The intelligence led operation was conducted in Kayunga village, Gombe parish, Wakiso town council Wakiso district. Police said the operation was targeting people that sell opium to different thugs in the area. “It has been established that the opium is sold by a group of individuals who disguise as charcoal sellers in Kayunga market. The exhibit has been recovered. The suspects arrested include Kafeero James also known as Uncle Manda, Alioni Gasto and Mwesigwa Isaac,” Kawala said.

All the drug dealers are residents of Kayunga village, Gombe parish, Wakiso town council, Wakiso district and they are currently detained at Wakiso police station. Kawala and Owoyesigyire said disruptive intelligence led operations continue in a bid to curb down crime.
