The Speaker of Parliament Anita Annette Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa have gone through unopposed for the 2026 parliamentary race. Among went through unopposed for Bukedea Woman MP while Tayebwa was unopposed in Ruhinda North County in Mitooma District.
However, Among and Tayebwa went through unopposed in a questionable manner after their challengers were all disqualified on grounds that they are not registered voters or their nomination deliberately frustrated. This is not the first time Among has frustrated her opponents. She did the same in the 2021.
National Unity Platform (NUP) Presidential candidate Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has since castigated the two heads of Ugandan Parliament for witch-hunting their opponents. Bobi Wine said: “This is comrade Kato Osbert, the National Unity Platform candidate for Ruhinda North Constituency. In this video, he narrates how he was ILLEGALLY BLOCKED from being nominated to run against Thomas Tayebwa.”
Bobi Wine said the Electoral Commission officials, who were clearly in a conspiracy started by claiming that “comrade Kato’s NIN number was invalid. He challenged them on that. Then, they changed the NIN numbers of three of his seconding supporters on his nomination forms and told him they were invalid. Shamelessly, these criminals are congratulating themselves for being unopposed!”
In the case of Among, Bobi Wine said the whereabouts of NUP candidate for Bukedea Woman MP, Asio Florence, where not known by close of the nomination days on Thursday this week. According to Bobi Wine, Asio’s phone number as well as the phone numbers of the comrades she was travelling with from Soroti to Bukedea for her nomination were all off.
“We’re in touch with their relatives who are desperately looking for them. Conspicuously, comrade Alupo Mercy Marion who was waiting at the EC offices all day is also not reachable on phone at the moment- we can only hope she’s fine,” Bobi Wine said.
The current leader of Opposition in Uganda explained that two days earlier, Asio called them us and informed them that unknown, armed persons traveling in a Premio vehicle had gone to her home, picked up her mother and two siblings and took them to an unknown location “where they were intimidated and asked to force her out of the race or face dire consequences!”
Bobi Wine said: “UGANDA IN 2025!! Shamelessly, after committing all these crimes, Anita Among is chest-thumping that she is unopposed! Before this, there was an attempt to also block our candidate for Kachumbala County from entering the Election Commission offices. After an intense standoff and protest, he entered and was nominated amidst great intimidation.”
