Heavy Security Presence As Kampala Nominates MPs

There was heavy presence of security personnel as the Kampala Electoral Commission (EC) nominated the candidates for the 10 elective positions. Uganda People’s Defence Forces -UPDF, Field Force Unit (FFU), general duty police officers, Counter-Terrorism (CT) and intelligence personnel were all in presence as various political party candidates including independents were being nominated.

EC Commission Sallie Simba, urged the candidates to maintain peace through out the campaign season because everyone needs a peaceful country. Kampala Returning Officer, Rashid Hashakya, warned candidates against early campaigns insisting that they should wait up to November 10.

Joel Ssenyonyi, the current Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Parliament, who is also the incumbent for Nakawa West was nominated and he is facing off with NRM’s Anderson Burora. NUP’s Spokesperson, Waiswa Mufumbiro, was nominated in absentia since he is on remand at Luzira prison over charges of an illegal military like parade.

Mufumbiro faces NRM’s Fred Ruhindi, FDC’s Moses Okware, independents Charles Keeno, Winfred Nakandi and Joy Kirabo. In Makindye East, Ali Nganda Mulyanyama was nominated on NUP ticket, and he will face off with his party definat Robert Ssekidde alias Tuff B and NRM candiate.

In Makindye West, Zahara Luyirika was nominated on NUP ticket and she will face off with the incumbent Allan Ssewanyana who is contesting as an independent after failing to secure NUP ticket. Makindye West also has Farouq Ntege and David Musiri.

In Lubaga South, Eugenia Nassolo was nominated on NUP ticket but she face an obstacle of incumbent Alloysius Mukasa who contests as an independent after failing to retain NUP card. In Lubaga North, Abubakar Kawalya, was nominated on NUP ticket.

In Kawempe South, NUP’s Fred Nyanzi was nominated and he faces stiff competition from Roy Ssemboga who failed to secure NUP ticket. In Kawemp North, Erias Nalukoola stands on NUP ticket and he faces NRM’s Faridah Nambi with who they competed in the March by-election after the demise of area MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.

For Kampala Woman MP, NUP’s Shamim Malende, will face off with PFF’s Kamulegeya, and others from NRM. Minister Minsa Kabanda was nominated for Kampala Central on NRM ticket, Moses Muhangi, a renown head of Uganda boxer’s federation was nominated as an independent while Lewis Rubongoya, was nominated on NUP ticket.
