Angry mourners have killed a policeman identified as, Suleiman Chemonges, who had been deployed to provide security at the burial of an inmate, Lazarus Kahangire, who passed away in a government prison. The incident occurred on Sunday when charged mourners pounced on the lonely policeman whose force number was No.75290. The killed Police Constable was aged 28 according to Rwizi regional police spokesperson Samson Kasasira.
“It’s alleged that today PC Chemonges Suleiman was deployed to guard at the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus an inmate who died from Nyabuhikye government prison, who was a remandee on a case of attempted murder vide IBD CRB 849/2023 which originated from a land case between the family of one Mbabazi Vicent and his brothers,” SP Kasasira said.
According to SP Kasasira, Chemonges reached immediately before his colleague and he was attacked and murdered by a mob involving the relatives of Kahangire who claimed that the deceased was killed by police while he was in prison. “Police responded to the scene and was able to recover an smg riffle no ug pol 563619069 with 16 rounds. The body of the deceased was conveyed to Ruhoko morgue pending postmortem. Inquiry into the matter are still ongoing,” SP Kasasira said.
The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, has strongly condemned the “senseless act of violence” where an irate mob attacked the policeman. PC Chemonges was attached to Bisheshe police station in Ibanda District.
