Bedigye Detained at Makindye Military Barracks

Unconfirmed reports indicate that four time President Yoweri Museveni challenger and former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party president, Col (rtd) Dr Kizza Besigye, has been allegedly detained at Makindye military barracks since Saturday night.

Besigye’s alleged detention emerged on Sunday morning by someone who claimed he had seen him in a military cell in Makindye military barracks alongside unidentified person but equally as old as the retired Colonel.

DPU later informed that Besigye had been arrested in a clandestine operation conducted by three security agencies the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), Police’s Crime Intelligence and International Security Organization (ISO).

DPU made inquiries with some of operatives and commanders in the cited security agencies and they revealed that Besigye had left Uganda on Saturday using Uganda Airlines but his destination was left a secret.

“But Besigye left the country yesterday (Saturday). He went with Uganda Airlines. Someone is just making up a story,” a senior security officer in one of the cited security agencies told DPU on Sunday at 2pm.

DPU reached out to Besigye’s WhatsApp number at 3pm and 7pm but no response was being given despite the messages being read. DPU also reached to Col Deo Akiiki the deputy Army Spokesperson on Sunday at 1pm but he did not respond despite reading the messages.

It has now emerged that Besigye left Uganda heading to Kenya to meet someone whose details are not yet unknown. If it true that Besigye is detained at Makindye military barracks, it means he has been in army detention since Saturday night when he was allegedly taken there.

However, it is not clear how Besigye who had travelled to Kenya using Uganda Airlines was arrested or abducted and brought back to Uganda and incarcerated in Makindye military barracks. Nevertheless, Besigye’s detention in Makindye military barracks could not be verified since all the concern security agencies haven’t respondent to the inquiries.

If it emerges that Besigye was picked by security agencies from Kenya, he would be an addition to the 36 FDC Katonga faction members who have been arrested from Kenya and brought back to Uganda under unclear circumstances.

The 36 FDC Katonga faction members who have since been released after spending several weeks on remand have since they were arrested from a hotel in Kenya by Uganda security men who even spoke local dialects. They face charges of espionage.
