Out of the 50 best students who sat for the May /June 2024 international Cambridge examinations at Vienna College Namugongo, 36 are girls.
The College Principal Mohammed Kakiika, attributed the performance for the girl child that stood at 65% to the curriculum that provokes the thinking skills of the learners.
“The Cambridge curriculum is multi-tasking, it is not cram work, the girl child are doing very well because naturally by genes, ladies have a higher multitasking ability probably than gents”said Kakiika
According to Kakiika the learners performed highly in Sciences, Economics ICT and social Sciences in general with the top performing A’level Najuma Benice scoring A in all her subjects of Physics, Chemistry and in Biology.
Of the 114 candidates who sat for the International General School Certificate of Education –IGSCEs 23 scored distinctions and 140 sat for A’ level.
Meanwhile Kakiika goes ahead to note that the ministry of education resolving to adopt a new lower secondary curriculum that started in 2020 is a milestone towards attaining holistic and competent learners.
About the emphasis for sciences by the government, Kakiika argued that this can easily be achieved by the ability to assess and teach sciences not as a hard subject but in a learner centered approach.
According to Kakiika, narrowing the gap between the international and the national curricula is important for the country, especially the grading system and the lessons deliverance that is learners centered.
Emmanuel Kamunyo, the careers advisor at Vienna College explained that career advice and guidance also plays a big role in choosing pathways for the learners.
