Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Abbas Byakagaba has been appointed by President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, as the new Inspector General of Police replacing John Martins Okoth Ochola who retired in March this year. Byakagaba, who is the current director of Counter-Terrorism (CT) will be deputized by AIGP James Ochaya who is also the current director of research.
Byakagaba is one of the few police AIGPs who has basic and senior military trainings from local and international military academies despite the fact that he has been serving in police force for decades. Before serving as director CT, Byakagaba served as commander Kampala Metropolitan Area.
It is not yet clear which roles the acting IGP Maj Gen Geoffrey Tumusiime Katsigazi has been assigned to since the new IGP and the deputy have been appointed. It is also the first time in two decades Uganda Police Force (UPF) is having two of his men at the helm without a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) General among them.
