Police have arrested and identified the thug seen in the viral video hacking a man who was making money transaction in Nateete, Rubaga Division, in Kampala. The thug has been identified as Ashraf Kiiza, who is an employee at Bashir Grain Millers.
Sam Turyamuhaki 55, has explained that he sometimes conducts financial transaction in the evening hours. Turyamuhaki said he was attacked on Monday this week at around 8pm at Nateete Ku Ttaano, when Kizza abruptly entered the counts office carrying a sack which contained a machete and a hammer.
“I was verifying eight million shillings that had been handed to me by the owner of grain miller Bashir. A man unexpectedly entered the office carrying a sack. In a terrifying turn of events, he pulled out a panga and hammer from the sack. He started demanding for the money I was counting,” Turyamuhaki told police.
In the video, Kiiza is seen placing the sack on the waiting chairs as Turyamuhaki was counting money and seemingly unbothered by the suspect’s presence. However, Kiiza picks a machete from the sack and eventually orders Turyamuhaki to surrender the money he was counting.
Turyamuhaki decides to grab the attacker’s panga but he misses it in the process. Kiiza who had fallen down starts hacking Turyamuhaki and the screams force the intervention of the nearby people who temporarily subdued him but he eventually escapes.
Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson said by the time Turyamuhaki was saved by nearby people, he had sustained severe head injuries from the assailant’s weapons. Owoyesigyire added that the locals rushed Turyamuhaki to the nearby health facility where he received prompt medical attention.
“The police were informed about the incident and responded. Exhibits, including the weapons used in the assault such as the hammer and panga, were recovered. Additionally, CCTV footage from the scene has been obtained to aid in the ongoing investigation,” Owoyesigyire said.
Owoyesigyire said Kiiza fled the scene and is currently on the run. He added that police have deployed the possible means to have Kiiza arrested in order to face charges of attempted murder, and aggravated robbery. It is not yet clear what prompted Kiiza to act in the thuggery way since he was an employee of the grain company which had just given money to Turyamuhaki.
