Man Arrested in Botched Robbery of UGX28M From Chinese Trader

Police in Old Kampala in holding, Ronald Ongom, for attempting to rob 28 million shillings from a Chinese trader Sun Hengde, in Kisenyi II Parish, Central Division, of Kampala. Facts gathered by police show that Ongom connived with a one Kaboyi a work at store of a Chinese trader and to have him locked inside so that he could varnish with the money in the dead of the night.

Ongom entered the store with Kaboyi at around 8pm pretending to checking items to buy but along the way he disappeared within the store. Hengde closed the stored and show Kaboyi off unsuspecting that he had locked a robber inside.

However, Ongom failed to locate the spare keys inside the store after he had packed 28.6 million shillings in the bag. “I wanted to move out but I got stuck. I called Kaboyi who brought for me a hammer. But when I was hitting the door locks, people in the nearby lodge heard and made an alarm,” Ongom explained.

Kaboyi pushed the hammer through one of the small openings at the store after failing to direct Ongom where to pick the spare keys. Ongom has said that they also planned to steal translator gadget, Wi-Fi system DVDR, Disk Drive, three extension cables and other items in the same night.

Hengde later arrived at the store but found when the locals had arrested him. Ongom was found with 28.6 million shillings. Patrick Onyango the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson confirmed the botched robbery incident.

“After getting the Loot, he wanted to get out but everywhere was locked. He rung Kaboyi who sent him a harmer so that he brakes the ventilator. As he tried to get out, he was heard by people at the Lodge who responded,” Onyango said.

Hengde deals in bales of clothes and the case was registered vid ref 03/27/02/2024 of USAFI police station. The store and shop is located at Kasajja building where Kaboyi works as a casual labourer.

Money that had been stolen include 50000 notes worth 18.8 million shillings, 20000 notes worth 4.68 million shillings, 10000 notes worth 3.49 million shillings and 5000 notes worth 1.66 million shillings.

Police are currently hunting for Kaboyi a resident of Nansana who also doubles as a bodaboda rider without a permanent sate.
