The decision to terminate Micho’s contract comes just two weeks after the Serbian tactician failed to guide Uganda Cranes to qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The team’s third-place finish in their group during the qualifiers proved insufficient for securing a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Micho, who had previously led Uganda Cranes to the 2017 AFCON after an absence of nearly four decades from the continental championship, was reappointed in 2021 under a three-year term contract. This reappointment followed FUFA’s decision to part ways with the former Cranes Chief, Jonathan McKinstry.
Micho’s return was anticipated to bring Uganda Cranes back to the AFCON, especially after their absence from the 2021 edition under McKinstry. However, this mission also proved elusive.
In the final group standings, Uganda Cranes finished in third place with seven points, falling just one point short of the Taifa Stars, who secured their spot as group runners-up with eight points. Algeria comfortably topped the group with an impressive sixteen points, while Niger finished at the bottom with only two points.
Micho’s exit occurs just two months before Uganda Cranes commence their 2026 World Cup Qualifiers Campaign. This campaign is scheduled to begin with an away match against Guinea in November 2023, as indicated by the recently released fixtures.
