Human rights defender in Uganda Nabuyanda John Solomon is facing accusations of promoting homosexuality.
Counsel Nabuyanda as he is always known by his colleagues, a self-styled human rights defender, has been accused by at least two people of trying to recruit them into homosexuality and inviting them to meetings of the LGBTQI+ movement.
One of the complainants, only identified as Caleb, a law student at Makerere University, filed a complaint with the Wandegeya Police Station saying that Nabuyanda had sent him “weird messages connected to the LGBTQI+ movement” and had invited him to meetings of the movement, even though he was not interested.
The other complainant, Karungi Lawrence, said that Nabuyanda had “continuously shared weird messages connected to the LGBTQI+ movement” and had invited him to meetings of the movement, even though he was not interested. He said that he had filed a complaint with the Mbalala Police Station in Mukono. The case is registered on SD Ref 12/22/07/023.
Currently, the police are investigating the allegations against Nabuyanda under section 11 of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, which prohibits the promotion of homosexuality. If convicted, Nabuyanda could face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Meanwhile, Nabuyanda’s supporters have accused the complainants of being politically motivated alleging that the accusations are part of a smear campaign against Nabuyanda, who has been a vocal critic of the Ugandan government’s anti-gay policies.
Commenting on the matter, Nabuyanda has denied the allegations against him insisting that he is a human rights defender and that he has never promoted homosexuality.
Meanwhile, this comes barely a month since the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law after parliament watered it down. The Act is still among the harshest anti-LGBTQ laws in the world.
