Policeman Killed Pursuing Mobile Money Robbers

A policeman pursuing mobile money robbers has been shot dead in Mubende district. The killed policeman has been identified as Corporal Joseph Oloya attached to Kiganda police station.

The incident which has been recorded as aggravated robbery and murder by shooting took place yesterday at around 5:40 pm at Kyakitanga Village, Manyogaseka Sub-county. Superintendent of Police –SP Racheal Kawala, the Wamala regional police spokesperson, said the incident involved three unidentified men.

SP Kawala explained that the preliminary findings show that on June 19, 2023, at around 5:40 pm, three armed robbers entered a mobile money agent shop which also doubles as a soda depot owned by Fils Janvier Bonani, at Kalongo, Mubende District.

Police said the robbers stole various items of unidentified value and fled the scene on a motorcycle. When police received the information, a team led by the Officer in Charge of Kiganda police station, immediately initiated pursuit of the suspects with the aim of apprehending them.

“During the pursuit, the suspects shot Cpl Oloya, who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Mubende regional referral hospital. The suspects also took Cpl Oloya’s magazine but left the firearm behind,” SP Kawala said.

Police has since extended its deepest condolences to the family and friends of killed Cpl Oloya. SP Kawala said teams comprised of the criminal intelligence and investigations specialists have embarked on hunting for Cpl Oloya’s killers.

“We have recorded relevant statements to aid the investigations. A red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle Reg No UDX 755C, belonging to the suspects, has been recovered. We want to assure the public that our task teams are fully committed and actively working to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in this incident,” SP Kawala said.

It is said that the killers varnished with more than 60 million shillings. Cpl Oloya’s murder came hours after police had warned that attacks on mobile money dealers had become rampant in the recent past.
