Unidentified man has been beaten to death on suspicion of stealing clothes from a boutique in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe district. The deceased allegedly broke into the boutique belonging to Irene Mukisa at around 5 am at Malindi war, Wakisi Division.
ASP Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson, said trouble started when Mildred Asiimwe came out of her house and saw Mukisa’s shop wide open. Asiimwe alerted the neighbours.
“When the neighbour one Asiimwe Mildred came out for a short call and saw the door opened, she called other neighbours. As they were observing the scene, they saw someone peeping from the trench while carrying a polythene bag (Kaveera),” Butoto said.
Butoto said the locals asked the man to explain who he was but he instead chose to take off. However, the residents started alarming and the mob pursued the man who they beat to death.
“The mob killed him instantly. An exhibit of a Kaveera containing breaking implements was recovered from the scene. The body has been taken Jinja hospital mortuary for Postmortem,” ASP Butoto said.

The Criminal Investigations Directorate -CID recorded close to 300 mob killings last year. Most of the victims were killed in suspicion of stealing items from shops, homes, while others were killed after being suspected to be practicing sorcery.
