Uganda’s leader, Yoweri Museveni, has started a 14 days isolation after testing positive for Covid-19. Museveni said he noticed some mild flu-like symptoms on Wednesday in one of the nostrils (the right one).
Museveni called his doctors who took samples in order to rule out Covid-19. His personal doctors took three samples- one rapid and two PCRs. The rapid one was negative and so was one of the PCRs.
However, Museveni said one of the PCRs was positive. This forced him to take precautionary measures as he travelled to country’s independence grounds at Kololo for State Of The Nation Address (SONA). He moved in a separate car from his wife Janet Kataaha Museveni as his doctors took back samples for reconfirmation.
“When I came back from Kololo, it was confirmed that I had Corona. I have therefore, self-isolated at Nakasero and I have delegated my work for Heroes’ Day in Luwero to Prime Minister, Robinah Nabanjja,” Museveni said.

Museveni has been cautious with Covid-19 as he has always ensured that everybody attending his events is test for the same. He has been wearing his face mask wherever he goes until the recent days.
“However, recently, I had to give up masks because they have been causing me allergic reactions in the eyes and also in the throat. Do you remember when I lost my voice twice during the elections? That is part of the allergy,” Museveni said.
This is Museveni’s second forced leave in the last 53 years, ever since 1971, when him and others started fighting Idi Amin. One other time, was when he had a problem of sinuses and he had to lie low for some days at Mweya.
Museveni said by God’s Grace all is well, and he is only experiencing mild symptoms. He, however, said he has always preferred to err on the side of caution and self-isolate for now. He also congratulated Ugandans and security agencies for going through Mwalimu Nyerere’s Prayer Day which was on June 1, 2023 and Martyrs Day June 3, 2023.
