Former Member of Parliament for Kawempe South, Mubarak Munyagwa, alias Mugaati Gwa Batta, and four other individuals have been incarcerated in Luzira Prison following charges of malicious damage to property and conspiracy to commit a felony.
The decision to send Munyagwa to an unexpected jail was made by Chief Magistrate Doreen Karungi Olga at Kajjansi Chief Magistrates Court.
Munyagwa and his co-accused are alleged to have unlawfully trespassed on land owned by Dechomai Asset Trust Number Three LCC, a Ugandan company owned by an American, with the intention to cause annoyance to the said company.
They are also accused of intentionally and unlawfully destroying cassava valued at 5 million Shillings, which belonged to Janan Opio, between May 26th, 2023, and June 3rd, 2023, in Mutungo Cell, Wakiso District.
However, all the accused parties denied the charges leveled against them, and, Munyagwa, in particular, vehemently maintained his innocence and posited that the accusations may be politically motivated by those who find his political affiliations offensive.
The vocal politician asserted that he legally acquired the disputed land by purchasing it for 1.2 billion Shillings through installment payments.
The State Attorney, Charlotte Kwikiriza, informed the court that investigations into the case are still ongoing.
Subsequently, Munyagwa’s legal team sought to apply for bail but was advised that due to time constraints, the court suggested they make the application next week. Consequently, the accused individuals were remanded in prison until June 12th, 2023.
