Abdullah Gulume, a butcher man in Arua City, cheated death when a relatives of a nursing student he was chewing inside Sevella Palace Lodge, raided the premises and tasked him to pay a fine or else face their wrath.
The incident that happened in the Central Business Division attracted police’s attention that rescued Gulume from the visibly charged relatives. SP Josephine Angucia, the West Nile regional police spokesperson, said at 3 pm, the Officer Incharge of Arua Central Police Station –CPS ASP Julius Jokkende, received information that a man had been unlawfully confined and being forced to pay Kasurube (fine) for sleeping with Rashida, yet he had not paid dowry.
Police have explained that ‘Kasurube’ is a cultural fine paid by a man for unlawfully having had sexual intercourse with a lady. Gulume was rescued by a team of police officers using a patrol vehicle and taken to Arua CPS.
SP Angucia said upon interrogation of the two, it was established that the rescued man is aged 25 while the nursing student is aged 22. Gulume, a Musoga by tribe and a butcher man, is resident of Tanganyika Central, in Arua city.

Rashida is a student of Nursing and midwifery at Arua School of Comprehensive Nursing. Gulume and Rashida said they were yet to chew each other at the time the relatives raided the lodge and caused commotion.
“Since the student was above 18yrs, her relatives were explained the circumstances under which the man could not be legally charged legally since both were mature and had consent of meeting, Both parties were sensitized and asked to amicably reconcile out of police,” SP Angucia said.
Gulume opened an assault case against Rashida’s relatives. He said the lady’s relatives arrested and beat him up while forcefully demanding a fine. This case has been registered on SD reference 42/23/05/2023.
