Eleven suspects of different charges have escaped from police custody in Buikwe district. The suspects fled yesterday when it was pouring heavily, according to Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson, ASP Hellen Butoto.
ASP Butoto has said that the suspects pulled the door of the Uniport at Kiyindi police station and varnished during the heavy rain. Kiyindi police station have explained that the group of the escapees was motivated by Umar Wedesi Mubedo, a former crime preventer.

Mubedo, is also a trained Special Police Constable and was deployed to guard polling stations in the 2021 general elections. ASP Butoto explains that Mubedo was arrested on charges of being in possession of government stores after he was found with police uniform and other kits belonging to the force.
Other suspects who have fled include Wamala Livingstone aka Badman, Mulwana Eddy and Tamale Ashraf aka Kabako who were in custody over burglary and theft, Lyagoba Julius was on defilement charges while Ssembogo Sam and Bugembe Mathius were arrested over stealing vanilla.

ASP Butoto noted that Siida Alex was facing domestic violence, Karemera was in cells over threatening violence, Mukonya Ronald and Musamali Twahir were arrested over smuggling alcohol to suspects in police cells.
However, Kiyindi police Uniport cell had more than 11 suspects but some did not join the escapees. Police have identified those who remained in Police custody as Ssempiga Habib, Kiiza Henry, Ssekiti Hamis, Ssenjova Rony and Kadinganya Ben.
Police have opened a charge of escape from lawful custody against the 11 escapees as their hunt intensified in Buikwe and neighbour district. ASP Butoto said police will all the possible means to the suspects arrested and charged with various offences.
