Shock engulfed inmates inside Fort Portal Main Prison on Saturday when their colleague Stephen Mugume who was facing murder charges was found hanging dead inside a toilet. The murder that has been recorded on Vide FTP DEF 07/2023 was brought to police attention by Prison Office Incharge SP Patrick Busuulwa 37.
Mugume 60, was a resident of Kisamutongore village, Bugaki sub-county, Kyenjojo District. Police and prison details show Mugume had been on charges of murder with another prisoner for the last five years and a few weeks ago he was committed to High Court for the full trial.
His suicide was discovered by his fellow inmate Ainebyoona who had gone to ease himself but found his body hanging on a cloth string. “No sooner had he entered the toilet than he saw the deceased hanging dead with his feet lying in the toilet bowl. Ainebyona immediately informed his colleagues who also informed the warders. The warders informed the OC, and the OC also communicated to the DPC Fort Portal CPS,” sources said.
