Chinese National Knocks Two School Children Dead

Two school children were knocked dead on Tuesday morning by a Chinese national at Bukuya road, in Kassanda district. Zhao Haizhanga, according to police, knocked the pupils of Glory Nursery and Primary School when he attempted to overtake a truck loaded with logs.

ASP Racheal Kawala, the Wamala regional police spokesperson, said the Chinese was driving a vehicle with registration number plate UAU 001V and crashed five children at Kamusenene village.

Two of the children died on the spot while three others including their teacher were rushed to the hospital with fractured body parts. ASP Kawala has identified the deceased children as Jonathan Matovu 5, and Buriana Nantongo 6, who were residents of the same village where the crash occurred.

ASP Kawala said police have since arrested the Haizhanga and he is currently detained at Kassanda police station as investigations into the whole incident proceed. More than 10 school children have been knocked dead since this term began.

Four students were knocked dead in Gomba at Kasaka secondary school, two in Kireka, two in Mukono, and another was knocked dead on Monday evening this week. Most of the children are knocked dead or injured by reckless and speeding drivers.

ASP Faridah Nampiima, the traffic police spokesperson, who often gives weekly road crash statistics has consistently cited reckless driving and speeding as the major causes of road crashes. In most cases, police figures show more than 60 people are knocked dead from Monday to Saturday every week.
