Sportswomen in the Uganda police force will perhaps live to remember the reigning Inspector General of Police -IGP Martin Ochola’s love for sports activities. In his second term at the helm of the force that is crucial in keeping law and order, Ochola has on various occasions extolled female police medallists with promotions and cash prizes.
Barely two years ago, Ochola promoted a number of female athletes as appreciation for their efforts that show the country win medals at the Olympics and Common Wealth games. On September 20, 2021, Ochola promoted Assistant Superintendent of Police -AIP Mercyline Chelangat to the rank of Inspector of Police -IP.
Peruth Chemutai who was a mere Special Police Constable -SPC was regraded to Constable and then promoted to the rank of IP. This was after she scooped a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Immaculate Chemutai who was a Corporal was promoted to the rank of Sergeant while Police Constable Renny Shida was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Ochola while promoting the officers said they were rewarded for the great success, pride, and jubilation they brought to the police institution and the country.
Ochola further encouraged sportswomen in the force to continue excelling in their field of sports and inspire young talent into sports. She also cautioned them against leading an indecent life that could ruin the force’s image but also their career and the country at large.
The gold medallists have often received appreciation tokens ranging from one million shillings to ten million shillings. The police force procured a van and other equipment to simplify the movement of its sportswomen and men.
It is no longer news that every policewoman who wins a Bronze, Silver, or Gold at the Olympics and Common Wealth games is assured of a promotion and cash token. All this is the spirit of promoting sports in the force.
Stella Chesang, who won gold in 2018 was also awarded by IGP Ochola who was in his first year as overall police boss. Chesang, who was also a mere SPC was regraded and catapulted to the rank of IP. In that same year, Chelangat who won the Bronze was regraded from SPC to Constable and then promoted to AIP while Scovia Ayikoru was also regraded from SPC to Constable.
