The Tuesday afternoon downpour in Kampala and its outskirts left a boy buried in the rubble of the collapsed perimeter wall. Police in Katwe has identified the deceased boy as Tony Kayongo.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, said Kayongo was buried by the perimeter wall of Eden Restoration church in Kanyanya zone, Ndejje division, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso district.

Police said the wall collapsed at around 4 pm on Tuesday during the heavy downpour when Kayongo was inside a house with his mother and two other siblings. The deceased’s mother has been identified as Margret Namalawa while the other children who survived the rubble are Brian Walugembe and Joseph Seka.

“Kayondo Tony was buried by the collapsing wall and died on spot, Seka Joseph escaped with minor injuries while Walugembe Brian and their mother escaped uninjured. The heavy downpour caused surface runoff which washed off the perimeter wall of Eden Restoration church in the same Zone,” Onyango said.

The rains also destroyed the perimeter wall of Butayi Hope which was about 15 metres from Eden Restoration Church. By the close of the day, police’s fire and emergency services had removed Kayongo’s body from the rubble.

Onyango said police have opened inquiries of Rash and Neglect Act causing Death. After investigations, the culpable persons will be arrested and arraigned in court. Kayongo’s corpse was taken to Mulago hospital for a post-mortem.
