Shock and tears engulfed pupils of Candy Kids Nursery and Primary when a vehicle rammed into a school gate this morning killing a 7-year-old girl. The school is located in Kamuli, Kireka township, Kira Municipality, in Wakiso district.
Police have identified the killed girl as Robina Nakafero, who was studying in Primary Two, and her life was ended by a Mitsubishi Canter UAZ 896J. “Today in the morning, tragedy struck Candy Kids Nursery and Primary School in Kamuli when a motor vehicle crashed into the perimeter fence, claiming the life of 7-year-old Nakafero Robina, a pupil in P2 class,” Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy KMP police spokesperson said.
Owoyesigyire further explained that the vehicle collided with the fence at approximately 7:10 am, causing fatal injuries to Nakafero. Police were swiftly alerted, and they responded by arresting the driver.
“The driver of the vehicle has been apprehended, and the vehicle has been towed to Kira Police station as inquiries into the matter have been initiated. We urge the public to exercise caution on the roads and to prioritize the safety of themselves and others,” Owoyesigyire said.
Nakafero’s body was taken to Mulago Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police and the public have extended their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Nakafero. “We share in their grief during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with the entire Candy Kids school community, who have been deeply affected by this tragic event,” police said.
It is not yet established whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or the vehicle was in a dangerous mechanical condition. For that reason, police have promised to keep the public informed as more details emerge from the ongoing investigation.
Last week, traffic police data for 2022 released by Senior Commissioner of Police -SCP Lawrence Niwabiine, showed incidents of road carnage have continued to claim more Ugandans every day. For very many years, Uganda has been losing 10 lives on the roads every day but last year’s figures show that 12 people are being reduced to statistics each day that passes.
