At least one person has been confirmed dead and six others rushed to the hospitals in critical condition after two vehicles were involved in a road crash at Kavule swamp along the Kampala-Masaka highway.
Assistant Superintendent of Police -ASP Faridah Nampiima, the traffic police spokesperson, said the crash involved a Fuso Fighter UBE 141A and a Noah UAZ 401K. According to ASP Nampiima, the crash resulted from overloading a Fuso lorry which overturned and fell on the Noah.
“The Fuso fighter was loaded with matooke and was traveling from Masaka side heading to Kampala. The motor vehicle overturned and fell on the lane of Kampala to Masaka where it found a Toyota Noah which was brushed on the sides of the driver in the process of skidding,” ASP Nampiima said.
The death rate on Ugandan roads has systematically been increasing since this year began. At least 12 people or more have been dying every day in road crashes. Most of the crashes have been caused by speeding, drunk driving, not wearing seatbelts, and having no crash helmets.
At least 4,152 people died in road crashes in 2021 whereby the majority were Bodaboda riders standing at 1390 followed by pedestrians at 1384. Passengers on motorcycles were 512 and others died in public taxis and buses. Some of the major crashes this is the Link Bus which killed 21 people and Bukomansimbi Fuso loaded with passengers which killed 11 on the spot.
