A man who was on Thursday prosecuted over defilement by the Director of Public Prosecution -DPP Justice Jane Frances Abodo, has pleaded guilty to defiling a four-year-old girl.
Busoga North Police spokesperson, Michael Kasadha, said Justice Abodo was monitoring and evaluating the ongoing High Court special session on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) at Kamuli Chief Magistrates Court.
Kasadha explained that Justice Abodo was informed that four suspects were pending trial over defilement and she decided to prosecute one instantly. The suspect, according to Kasadha, pleaded guilty because of overwhelming evidence.
“We had four cases of Aggravated Defilement for Kamuli and Buyende districts scheduled for today (Sept15). Justice Abodo personally prosecuted one case of aggravated defilement that occurred in Buyende in 2020 where a suspect of 33 years old sexually abused a toddler of 4 years. The director adduced evidence that compelled the suspect to plead guilty. He was convicted pending sentencing,” Kasadha said.
The High Court session in Kamuli and Buyende set out to hear more than 50 cases of aggravated defilement, defilement, robbery, and theft. By yesterday, 42 had been heard and the prosecution had secured 32 convictions
“We attribute the success stories to the great support from the Regional Police Commander and the entire regional team, unit commanders, and their teams,” Kasadha said. Cases of defilement skyrocketed during the two years of school closure in a bid to control the spread of Covid19. It is estimated that more than 600000 girls were impregnated during the lockdown period that started on March 18 up to January 10th, 2022.
