Unidentified man was last night shot dead on allegations of stoning a policeman sitting on a night patrol vehicle. It is alleged that the man stoned Police Constable Lambat Ekomut, who pursued the suspect and shot him in the stomach brutally ending his life.
Constable Ekomut in his statement at Kampala Central Police Station says it was around 11pm when an unknown person threw a stone at him. Ekomut explains that him and other colleagues had parked outside New Taxi Park.
“We were sitting on a Patrol vehicle at New Taxi Park and a stone was thrown at me. We saw the suspect running away and we pursued him. The suspect entered a nearby drainage channel. But there was a scuffle and I released a bullet which caught him in the stomach,” Constable Ekomut explains.
It is not yet clear what exactly happened because the talk at New Taxi Park seems to be leading to a different direction. Some people claim the police officers came seemingly look for the deceased for unknown reasons. But this information is yet to be substantiated. Nevertheless, deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said they are investigating the incident to establish what exactly happened.
“It is alleged that while police officers where on a patrol vehicle that had parked in the New taxi park, an unidentified person hit an officer, Police Constable Lambat Ekomut with a stone. The suspect fled and entered a nearby drainage channel. PC Ekomut and his colleagues pursued him with an intention to arrest him,” Owoyesigyire said.
He added that “It is alleged PC Ekomut caught up with the suspect and attempted to arrest him. A scuffle ensued, which led to an officer discharging a bullet. The bullet hit the male adult in the stomach and later succumbed to the bullet wound. An inquiry into the shooting incident is ongoing.”
In order to understand the truth behind the killing, Owoyesigyire said the gun suspected to have been used during the incident has been recovered and submitted for analysis. Police have embarked on identifying the victim.
The New Taxi Park incident comes three days after another man was brutally killed by police officers in Gombe division in Wakiso district. A man suspected to have been part of the group that raided the home of Kizitio 55, who had reportedly sold his land was shot dead. However, locals insisted that it was a well-planned murder by the deceased’s haters conniving with police.
