President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the commander in chief (CIC) of armed forces, has today promoted Lt Gen Wilson Mbadi to full General and appointed him Chief of Defence Forces- CDF.
Reliable sources intimated to Uganda Radio Network that Mbadi who has been deputy to Gen David Muhoozi, will take over as CDF by close of business since the former was appointed state minister for internal affairs.
In 2017, Museveni appointed Gen Mbadi to deputise Gen Muhoozi as CDF replacing Gen Katumba Wamala and Lt Gen Charles Angina respectively. Gen Katumba at the time was appointed state minister for works while Lt Gen Angina was sent to Operation Wealth Creation.
Before his appointment as deputy CDF, Mbadi who had been at the rank of Major General, was serving as Chief of Staff. Mbadi was for over five years a personal assistant to Museveni commonly known as ADC in security forces.
Mbadi joined the Army in 1986 but he was commissioned in 1991 after completing Officer Cadet course at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, in UK where he graduated as one of the top students. He attended a platoon commander’s course at Uganda School of Infantry and later proceeded to Uganda Junior Staff College all in Jinja.
Other military schools or colleges Gen Mbadi has attended include Mobile International Defence Management Course in Lukasa Zambia, Company Command Course in Tanzania, Combat Group Command Course at Armored Corps Centre and School, in India, Senior Command and Staff Course at Defence Staff College, Kenya, Peace Support Operation Course, Kenya and Strategic Studies at University of Nairobi and master’s degree at Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, US.
President Museveni has also promoted Lt Gen Peter Elwelu to full General to deputise Mbadi. Gen Elwelu has been commander UPDF Land Forces and has been replaced with Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Gen Elwelu has been in news since November 2016 when he commanded an attack on Rwenzururu kingdom palace where more than 150 people were killed. At the time, Elwelu was a Brigadier General and commander of 4th Division in Mbarara. Elwelu, shortly after Rwenzururu kingdom attacker, he was promoted to Major General, then Lieutenant General and now full General.
Muhoozi has been commanding Special Forces Command –SFC which guards the President, First Lady and other key military and government installations. It was not clear on who has replaced Lt Gen Muhoozi as SFC commander and where Maj Gen San Kavuma who has been deputy Gen Elwelu has been posted.
