If crowds that today stood by the roadside to catch a glimpse of President Yoweri Museveni, are anything to go by, National Resistance Movement-NRM, is likely to win the district in next week’s presidential and parliamentary elections.
As early as 9am, hundreds of people had stood by the roadsides waiting for Museveni who was returning to the district to galvanize his support which is being threatened by National Unit Platform –NUP led by presidential candidate, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.
Museveni has been winning Mityana district over the years but of recent there has been increased presence of NUP and people power movement. In the 2016 elections, former Police Spokesperson now ICT minister, Judith Nabakooba, warn Mityana Woman MP seat, State minister for tourism, Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi, warn Mityana North while Joseph Luzige warn the Chairman V position.
However, Busujju constituency went to, David Kaluwanga Lukyamuzi, while Mityana Municipality seat was scooped by, MP Francis Zaake. As things stand now, NRM is facing stiff competition from NUP candidates in both parliamentary and local government positions. There are there are fears that most of the positions could be taken by NUP which is Uganda’s newest political party.
Minister Nabakooba faces stiff competition from former NBS and Akaboozi FM journalist, Joy Bagala, who is standing on NUP ticket. But the crowds that showed up today to welcome Museveni could settle the fears of losing major positions to NUP.
Museveni used the opportunity to commission Mityana Hospital which offers health services to people of Mityana, Kassanda and Mpigi districts. Museveni also flagged off the rehabilitation of 83 km Mityana –Mubende road which will cost over 200 billion shillings.
The fountain of honour also warned people threatening the electorate to stop with immediate effect or face the wrath of security agencies. Museveni urged politicians to convince votes as opposed to threats and intimidations.
