President Yoweri Museveni has today commissioned a multi-billion shillings market in Entebbe Municipality, Wakiso district.
The market that is located in Kitooro is said to have consumed more than 20 billion shillings and it is connected with Closed Circuit Television –CCTV cameras.
Museveni said CCTV cameras are intended to provide security to the vendors and would be used to capture all criminals that would attempt to antagonize successful operations of vendors’ businesses.
In his speech, Museveni urged the market leadership to ensure stalls are given to the poor but not the rich. Museveni said giving stalls to the rich is like creating a private section in a public school.
“This market is the first school. Let the poor people operate in this market and when they get money they can graduate to other business,” Museveni said. The Kitooro market has been operating since 1970s and it accommodates over 900 vendors.
Museveni since he started campaigns on November 9, 2020 has been commissioning markets in various parts of the country. The president has opened markets in Soroti and Tororo districts.
In next week’s presidential elections, Museveni faces 10 other candidates. Apart from his two fellow bush war comrades Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde and Maj Gen Gregg Mugisha Muntu, Museveni faces a 38-year-old music star turned politician, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.
Kyagulanyi is believed to be the strongest candidate Museveni is facing in this elections. But the retired four-star General seems to be less bothered since he has been defeating his bush war doctor, Col Kizza Besigye. In all the previous elections, Dr Besigye has been alleging that Museveni rigs elections but he often fails to avail substantive evidence during court trial.
Museveni won 2016 general elections with 60.8 percent while his nemesis Dr Besigye had 35 percent. With Besigye’s absence, Museveni and National Resistance Movement –NRM believe they will win next week’s polls with over 80 percent.
