How 84-Year-Old Woman Was Murdered Over 30 US Dollars

The suspects, according to Kigezi regiona police spokesperson, Elly Mate, strangled their mother because of 100000 shillings.

Like her name, Joy was joyous when she received approximately 30 US dollar which is 100,000 shillings in Uganda currency.

Joy received the money on Wednesday this week under the government program that caters for elderly persons of 80 years and above. After receiving money, she went back to her home in Kajwamushana cell, Kicwamba parish Ruhinda sub-county, in Rukungiri district.

Little did Joy know that the jubilation she had after receiving the money was going to be her last. During night hours, Joy was attacked by people suspected to be her children and grandchildren who strangled her death.

Elly Mate, the Kigezi police spokesperson, said in preliminary police investigations it has been established that at night one grandchild, Mutekanga Saudi, while sleeping heard the deceased screaming that was being killed but did not disclose the names.

The grandchild who is just six years could do little to save her grandmother. Police have so far picked to suspects who are the deceased’s children. The suspects include daughter Orikiriza Rovince, 36 and son Barwegirira Elisam 60.

However, police are holding Orikiriza and Barwegirira to help in revealing their children who could have participated in the killing of their grandmother.  Orikiriza in her statement Ruhinda police station indicated that she returned from a trading centre where she had gone to charge her phone but found her mother lying dead in a pool of blood.

Orikiriza indicates that she alerted her elder brother Barwegirira who in turn reported the case to Ruhinda Police station. Detectives and Scene of crime officers visited and a postmortem has already been conducted revealing strangulations as well stabbing.
