On his way back to Makindye West constituency, MP Allan Ssewanyana, tested police wrath as he was arrested and detained. This was about 40 minutes after he had been nominated at Kampala Electoral Commission headquarters in Ntinda township.
Ssewanyana was arrested by police in Katwe alongside his 31 supporters. Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said Ssewanyana was defying directives intended to prevent the spread of Covid19.
Police said Ssewanyana was not the only MP or aspirant that deviated from Covid19 guidelines but even others. Onyango cited other MPs who tried to insist on conducting rallies after their nomination as Ssemujju Nganda of Kira Municipality, Betty Nambooze of Mukono Municipality, Kato Lubwama of Lubaga South, Wakayima Hannington Musoke, a candidate in Nansana Municipality, Farouk Ntege an aspirant for Makindye Division and Mathias Mulumba a candidate for Kawempe North.
“Over 15 motor vehicles that were part of Ssemujju’s convoy were impounded at parked at Nansana Police Station. Ssewanyana and Ntege are being held at Katwe Police Station. Hon. Ssewanyana is being held with over 31 of his supporters,” Onyango said.
Police also battled a group of youth in Kisekka Market who were allegedly attacking joint security team that was on its patrol in the area. Onyango alleged that the youth pelted security team with stones.
“They damaged a military vehicle and they responded with teargas. Four suspects were arrested and detained at CPS Kampala,” Onyango said.
Meanwhile, nomination exercise at Kampala Electoral Commission was full of pomp and excitement as some candidates such, Faridah Nambi, arrived in a Caterpillar commonly known as a Grader.
