DANIEL MUMBYA: The UPDF Engineering Brigade has today officially handed over the fully renovated facilities of Busoga University to the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Busoga University Task Force at the university’s main campus in CMS, Bulamagi Sub-county, Iganga District.
More than UGX 4 billion was invested in the first phase of the renovation project, which began in May 2025. The works included the rehabilitation of the science laboratory, library, study rooms, and the administration block.
The Member of Parliament for Kigulu South Constituency, Andrew Kiiza Kaluya, commended the UPDF Engineering Brigade for its transparency, professionalism, and delivery of high-quality infrastructure.
Kaluya also highlighted the plight of former Busoga University students who have remained stranded since the institution’s closure. He noted that many graduates have struggled to secure employment because their academic documents are not fully recognized.
He pledged to personally present the university’s statutory approval before Parliament and engage the Prime Minister as soon as Parliament resumes sitting, saying he is committed to seeing the university officially reopened.
The Chairperson of the Busoga University Task Force, Prof. John Robert Tabuti, praised the successful completion of the first phase of the renovation works, describing it as a major milestone towards reopening the institution. He appealed to the Ministry of Education and Sports to expedite the remaining phase of the project.
Prof. Tabuti expressed optimism that the university will be ready to admit students for the June 2027 intake, provided that the necessary statutory approval is granted.
The handover ceremony was attended by several stakeholders, including local leaders and officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, as well as the Ministry of Works and Transport.
