KIBOGA, September 22, 2026 – Police in Kiboga District have arrested a 27-year-old casual labourer suspected of hacking his employer to death following a disagreement over a Shs20,000 wage payment.
The suspect, identified as Maniriho Baseme, a resident of Kiryamuli Village, Nakasozi Parish, Nakasozi Sub-county, is accused of killing Ssengaga Vincent, 47, a prominent farmer from the same village.
According to police, the incident occurred on September 21, 2026, after Ssengaga hired Baseme and another casual worker, identified as Ssenteza, to pick coffee from his farm at an agreed fee of Shs20,000.
At around 4pm, after completing the work, the two workers reportedly demanded their payment, but Ssengaga did not have the money at the time. Police said Baseme decided to take a full tin of coffee as payment, a move that was opposed by the farmer.
The disagreement reportedly escalated into a heated verbal exchange, prompting Ssengaga to pick up a stick and attempt to beat the suspect. Baseme allegedly pulled a panga from his trousers and cut the farmer on the neck and left hand, inflicting serious injuries.
The victim was rushed to Nakasozi Health Centre II for first aid before being referred to Kiboga General Hospital as his condition deteriorated. However, he reportedly died before reaching the hospital at around 10pm.
Police said a homicide team, accompanied by a canine unit, visited and documented the scene after a report was made by Ssenyonga Hamis, a resident of Kiryamuli Village. A blood-stained panga, suspected to have been used in the attack, was recovered. The canine unit reportedly helped track and arrest the suspect.
Police recorded witness statements, while the deceased’s body was taken to Kiboga Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Wamala Region Police spokesperson SSP L. Kigozi said investigations were ongoing and urged employers to agree with casual workers on payment terms before assigning them work.
