Police in Kampala have arrested a 38-year-old boda-boda rider in connection with the vandalism and attempted theft of a government electrical installation in Kagugube Zone, Kampala Central Division.
The suspect, identified as Kimunyu Thomas, a resident of Nankulabye, was apprehended on September 22, 2026, after allegedly attempting to collect and transport copper wire cut from an electric pole.
According to a statement issued by Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident occurred at about 5:00am when a security guard reportedly spotted an individual cutting copper wire from a government electrical installation.
The suspected vandal reportedly fled after being approached by the guard, abandoning the cut wire at the scene.
Shortly afterward, another individual arrived on a motorcycle, registration number UMA 621GZ, and allegedly attempted to collect and transport the recovered wire.
The security guard reportedly apprehended the suspect before police officers responded to the scene.
Police secured and examined the area, recovered the cut electrical wire and recorded statements from relevant witnesses as part of the ongoing investigations.
Kimunyu remains in police custody to assist with investigations into the incident.
Police are also investigating the motorcycle allegedly used in the attempted theft and examining possible links between the suspect and other cases of vandalism targeting electrical infrastructure in the area.
The case is being investigated at Wandegeya Police Station, with inquiries still ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify any other individuals who may have been involved.
Police have not yet disclosed whether the individual who allegedly cut the copper wire has been identified or arrested.
The incident highlights concerns over the vandalism of government electrical installations, which can disrupt essential services and result in financial losses.
Authorities have urged vigilance as investigations continue into the suspected theft and vandalism of public infrastructure in the capital.
